This week’s Field Guide is all about the color black, with a little white thrown in the mix too.

There is something really beautiful about the way homes look without all those extra colors. I’m really drawn to sterile looking homes, but the “homeyness” seems missing sometimes. These spaces really proved me wrong. They may lack a variety of color, but they feel incredibly warm. I hope that we can come close to capturing this feeling in our future home.

Last weekend we started grouting the subway tiles we put up for the never ending project. Hopefully we will get to that soon, but for now, since we have tile on the brain, I thought a Field Guide post would be appropriate. To me, subway tile is pretty timeless. It looks great stacked, staggered or patterned. With either light or dark grout, and either horizontal or vertical. My personal favorite? Vertically stacked tiles with black grout. Here are some other beautiful combinations.

Ariele Alasko makes custom dining tables and headboards with reclaimed wood. Around the holidays she started selling some wall panels in the same style and they are incredible. They are currently sold out, but I’m sure she’ll make more. In the meantime you should check out her blog, Brooklyn to West. She documents her process, and her lovely apartment.

This week’s Field Guide is all about cork.

Cork has a great texture, is versatile, and is unexpected. To top it off, if you harvest it correctly you don’t harm the tree itself, making it sustainable. Here are a few ways to incorporate cork into your home. I’m especially loving the cork wall in Matt and Kathy’s home.

This month’s Field Guide is about curiosities.

Curiosities have a bad wrap as just being something strange in a jar. I think the right oddity in the right space can be a surprising and unique way to decorate. Even the weirdest item can look beautiful with great presentation. Here are some subtle ways to start off your curiosity collection (or display the one you already have).
